ERRCS and Public Safety BDAs: A Primer
Emergency Radio Responder Communications Systems or ERRCS, also known as Bi-Directional Amplifiers or BDAs, provide reliable in-building coverage for police, fire and EMS inside buildings. Required by Fire Code Section 510 in large buildings to receive a Certificate of Occupancy, these systems reinforce radio coverage.

An ERRCS feeds a Distributed Antenna System or DAS, for in-building coverage where it’s needed most: Stairwells, elevators, underground parking, interior spaces. ERRCS and DAS solutions are required in most new construction or when a property has major upgrades or replacement of an existing fire alarm system.

ERRCS Case Studies

New Downtown Los Angeles Highrise: We designed, installed, commissioned, tested, and support an ERRCS for a ten-story highrise, on time and under budget. This system has operated flawlessly for over five years.
Major Corrections Facility BDA Rebuild: A 2,000+ bed County Corrections campus has an early, pre-Section 510 ERRCS covering 27 housing units, tunnels, and support buildings. As part of their fire alarm system replacement, we created a migration plan, re-using portions of the existing DAS solution, ensuring proper coverage for officer safety through the entire upgrade. (Pending approval.)
Senior Living Refit, Pasadena: When an eight-story apartment building was refit as a senior living center, it required a new fire alarm system. That in turn triggered a requirement to confirm in-building coverage for police and fire radios. Gaps in coverage meant the property required a retrofit BDA. We designed, installed, tested, and commissioned the system which is operating to this day.
Property Management Company support: We are taking over support and yearly testing for a company managing over sixty different Southern California properties, each with a BDA and DAS. Each location will be managed at a budgeted, predictable rate. Where systems require refit or repair, we will quote a firm price, ensuring the company’s properties have compliant, safe radio coverage for years to come.
Storage Complex with multi-band radio coverage: A new three-story storage rental complex in the Inland Empire required additional Public Safety coverage to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy. This location required a complex, three-band system using two BDAs through a single DAS. All work was done on an expedited basis, including last-minute added coverage antennas after the initial inspection. The system is operating as designed.

Separate from cellular coverage: Public Safety radio coverage is usually separate from Cellular. For more about Cellular coverage, please see this section.
